Short answer: PLA is easy, affordable, and detailed. ABS is tougher and much more heat resistant, and can be smoothed to a glossy finish.
Side by side
| PLA | ABS | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lowest | Low material cost, but harder to print |
| Ease of printing | Very easy | Needs an enclosed printer and experience |
| Toughness | Stiff but brittle | Tough and impact resistant |
| Heat | Softens around 55–60 °C (130–140 °F) | Holds shape to about 95–100 °C (200–210 °F) |
| Finish | Great detail, paints well | Sands, paints, and can be vapour-smoothed to a gloss |
| Outdoors | Not for long-term use | Yellows in sun; ASA is better |
