Aluminum is light, strong for its weight, and conducts heat well. It's one of the most common metals for CNC machining, and it can also be 3D printed for complex shapes. Metal parts can be made by metal 3D printing (which fuses metal powder) or by CNC machining (which cuts the part from a solid block). Metal 3D printing handles complex shapes; CNC is often more affordable for simpler ones. Your shop will suggest the best method.
What Aluminum is good at
- Lightweight: About a third the weight of steel.
- Easy to machine: CNC aluminum is fast and relatively affordable for metal.
- Conducts heat: Ideal for heat sinks and cooling parts.
- Finishing options: Can be anodized in colours for protection and looks.
Where it falls short
- Softer than steel: Scratches and wears more easily.
- Metal pricing: Still much more than plastic.
Is Aluminum right for my project?
It's usually a good fit if your item:
- needs metal strength but low weight
- needs to move heat away
- is a custom bracket, housing, or mount
For maximum strength, choose stainless steel. For light and very strong, titanium.
Common questions
What is anodizing? A surface treatment that hardens aluminum and can add colour. Ask shops if they offer it.
