Also called: CNC milling, CNC routing

CNC machining uses computer-controlled cutting tools to carve parts from a solid block or sheet of material. Unlike 3D printing, which adds material, CNC removes it. It's great for precise, strong parts, especially in metal.

Good for

  • Precise metal parts
  • Aluminum brackets and housings
  • Wood furniture and signs (CNC routing)
  • Parts needing tight tolerances

How it works

  1. You upload a 3D file (STEP files are best for CNC) and note any critical dimensions.
  2. The shop plans the cutting toolpaths.
  3. The part is cut, then deburred and finished.
  4. Optional finishing like anodizing or polishing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very precise
  • Full strength of solid material
  • Excellent surface finish

Cons

  • Some shapes (deep internal channels) are impossible
  • Setup costs make single parts pricier
  • Material waste

Questions to ask the shop

  • Which file format do you prefer?
  • What tolerances can you hold?
  • Is 3D printing cheaper for my design?

Common materials

Aluminum · Stainless steel · Brass / bronze · Wood / plywood · Acrylic

Common questions

CNC or 3D printing? CNC is best for precise, strong parts with simpler shapes, especially in metal. 3D printing is better for complex shapes and low-cost plastic parts.
