ASA

The outdoor version of ABS. Tough, heat-resistant, and built to handle years of sun and weather.

ASA is similar to ABS but is made to resist UV light. That makes it the best everyday choice for parts that live outdoors: it stays tough and keeps its colour in sun, rain, and heat much longer than PLA, PETG, or ABS.

What ASA is good at

  • Built for outdoors: Resists sunlight, weather, and colour fading.
  • Heat resistant: Handles about 95–100 °C (200–210 °F), so car exteriors and hot decks are fine.
  • Tough: Takes impacts and stress like ABS.
  • Matte finish: Prints with an attractive, slightly matte look.

Where it falls short

  • Harder to print: Like ABS, it needs an enclosed printer and experience.
  • Costs a little more: Than PLA, PETG, and ABS.
  • Fumes while printing: Shops need ventilation. Finished parts are fine.

Is ASA right for my project?

It's usually a good fit if your item:

  • will spend a long time outside
  • faces sun, heat, or weather
  • needs to be tough

For indoor heat-resistant parts, ABS works well. For a budget outdoor part that won't see extreme sun, PETG can do the job.

Common questions

ASA or PETG for outdoors? Both work outdoors. ASA lasts longer in strong sun and handles more heat; PETG is cheaper and easier to print.

Can ASA be painted? Yes, it sands and paints well, like ABS.
