PETG is a close relative of the plastic used in water bottles. It's tougher and a little more flexible than PLA, handles more heat, and resists water well. Many shops treat it as their go-to material for parts that need to work, not just look good.
What PETG is good at
- Tough: It bends slightly before breaking, so it survives drops and stress better than PLA.
- Handles more heat: It softens around 70–80 °C (160–175 °F), comfortably higher than PLA.
- Water and weather resistant: It doesn't absorb much water and handles outdoor use better than PLA.
- Clear options: It's available in translucent and see-through colours.
- Affordable: Only slightly more than PLA.
Where it falls short
- Less crisp detail: Fine details and sharp corners aren't quite as sharp as PLA.
- Harder to finish: It's glossy and a bit gummy, so it doesn't sand or paint as easily.
- Not for high heat: A car interior in a hot summer can still be too much; ABS or ASA handle heat better.
- Long-term sun: It holds up better than PLA outdoors, but ASA is best for years of direct sun.
Is PETG right for my project?
It's usually a good fit if your item:
- is a practical, working part
- may be used outdoors or around water
- needs to be tough but not rubbery
For more heat or years of sun, ask about ASA. For a painted, highly detailed finish, PLA may be better.
Common questions
Is PETG stronger than PLA? PETG is tougher: it bends before it breaks and survives impacts better. PLA is actually stiffer, but it snaps more easily.
Is PETG food-safe? The raw material is widely used for food containers, but 3D printed parts have tiny grooves that can trap bacteria. Ask your shop about food-safe filaments and coatings before using a print with food.
Can PETG go outside? Yes, it's a good choice for outdoor items. For parts in strong sun for many years, ASA lasts longer.
